Future Growth in Nagpur
Nagpur, the orange city of India, located in the centre of India becoming the growth Capital of India very rapidly. Not us, the report published by Oxford economics says that it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, with a constant growth rate of more than 8 %.
But the things were never been so easy for Nagpur. Pre Independence, it was the largest city in central west India and had a great prominence…things changed post-Independence, Nagpur, which was capital of MP (Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh were part of MP then), but when Maharashtra and MP separated, Nagpur not only lost its tag of Capital but lost the attention of Government also. Mumbai emerged as the major centre of growth. Not only Mumbai grew but the cities in its proximity also shared this growth. Government’s apathy towards development of the Nagpur and surrounding region caused it dear and as such city lagged behind in the race of development
Nagpur, with its rich heritage of mineral resources was still struggling strong. With the huge stock of resources like granite, coal, limestone drew the attention of few industries to set up their plants in the area. Many cement plants, coal mines, coal washeries and thermal power stations started their operations in the region and soon this area became the highest producer of thermal energy which contributes 65% of total energy production by state of Maharashtra.
After inception of MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development corporation) in 1962, a 5 star industrial area which is one of the largest in the Asia set up in Butibori. Many private industries shown their interest and started their units in this area.
Geographically, Nagpur is in centre of India which connects major cities by road and rail and the city exploited this fact. The ring road encircling the city played major role in transportation of goods from one city to other without disturbing the main traffic of city.
The forest and wild life around Nagpur was nurtured and new sanctuaries and tiger reserves established here which enhanced the travel and tourism in the area. The good standard of living, best cleaning and savage management system, best public transport and connectivity to all remote areas are notable achievements of Nagpur.
The city has recognized as the provider of best Healthcare services too. Educational institutes like VNIT and Laxminarayan Institure of Technology etc. played their part in quality education. ISRO, DRDO, CSIR, etc. brought recognition to the city in terms of science and technology.
All these things did not remain unnoticed, Government was looking for a location which could cater to its needs for future growth and Nagpur was the best suitable option for this.
Ministry of Commerce launched its ambitious project MIHAN (Multi Model International cargo hub and Airport at Nagpur) in Nagpur. With the aim to serve around 14 million passengers and 0.87 tons of cargo per year. In addition to this, a special economic zone which comprises around 2000 hectares which is proposed to house various types of industries like textile, food processing, garments, electronic goods, gems and jewellery etc also set up in MIHAN and to aid this, it facilitates parking for around 900 trucks, huge warehouse, open stockyard, cold storage etc. and by the side of this road terminal, there is a proposed rail terminal capable of handling 2 trains at a time.
The special economic zone has reserved 1500 acres of space for IT and ITES as well. The IT majors like Infosys, TCS, HCL, Wipro etc. have already been allotted the land and some of them have started functioning as well. DLF, Lupin, Hexaware, Dukes etc. are few more reputed names which are part of this list. Not only Indian but international Giants have also invested here and one big name is US based Boeing Inc.
With the start of MIHAN in Nagpur, The real estate sector saw a tremendous boom. The property prices upped by around 40 % in Nagpur. This has not only generated income and revenue but great amount of jobs and opportunities in this area. This grabbed the attention of Giants like Sahara , Tata, Godrej, Mahindra and many more to invest in the area.
Spurred by this development, Maharashtra state road development corporation decided to construct 701 km long, 8 lane expressway, connecting the two capitals of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Nagpur. This expressway proposed to run through 10 districts, 26 tehsils, and 390 villages in the state and is expected to cut travel time between the two cities to 8 hours.
The state government also plans to build 24 townships along the route which will include state-of-the art healthcare facilities, skill management centers, IT parks and educational institutions. This has added more business and opportunities to Nagpur and nearby areas.
A world class film city is also proposed near Ramtek, the favorite tourist station of Nagpur. The already congested film Industry in Mumbai-Pune will be facilitated by this. This will enhance opportunities in entertainment and tourism sector.
Nagpur has seen a great development in almost all the sectors like IT, Real estate, travel, tourism, education, agriculture, banking, entertainment etc. What requires for any business to flourish? The best infrastructure, resource, market, transportation. Nagpur has everything. The growth of Nagpur is not just a growth, its sustainable growth and that makes it stand out in a long run.
